FENCES
Fences do not require a permit, however, if the proposed fence is intended to be built higher than the maximum allowable height, an approved Variance and Development Permit would be required.
Fence height restrictions vary by Municipality, by Zone, and by the applicable Zoning By-Law. The following is a shortened summary of maximum allowable heights for residential fencing:
- Town of Stonewall: fences in residential zones are permitted to be a maximum height of 3.5 feet in the front yard and at a maximum height of 6 feet in the rear and/or side yards. For fencing in other zones, please refer to the Town of Stonewall Zoning By-Law or contact the SIPD.
- Town of Teulon: fences in most residential and commercial zones are permitted to be a maximum height of 3.5 feet in the front yard and at a maximum height of 6 feet in the rear and/or side yards. For fencing in other zones, please refer to the Town of Teulon Zoning By-Law or contact the SIPD.
- R.M. of Rockwood: fences in most residential and agricultural zones are permitted to be a maximum height of 4 feet in the front yard and at a maximum height of 6.5 feet in the rear and/or side yards. For fencing in other zones, please refer to the R.M. of Rockwood Zoning By-Law or contact the SIPD.
- R.M. of Rosser: fences in residential zones are permitted to be a maximum height of 4 feet in the front yard and at a maximum height of 6.5 feet in the rear and/or side yards. For fencing in other zones, please refer to the R.M. of Rosser Zoning By-Law or contact the SIPD.
Please note, if your property is located on a corner, the maximum fence height differs for the portion of fence located on the corner where two streets intersect, known as the "corner vision triangle" (see example below).
NOTE: It is the landowner's responsibility to satisfy or adhere to any Development Agreement requirements that may pertain to the property.
See below for a depiction of fencing locations:
* Fencing should be installed within your own property lines, unless you have made an agreement with the adjacent landowner(s) to share the fence.
Please contact the SIPD if you have other questions about fencing requirements on your property.
